Science suggests parents are taking parenting too far

Science suggests parents are taking parenting too farScience suggests parents are taking parenting too farHelicopter parents, lawnmower parents, andsnowplow parents- these are largely pejorative labels for mothers and fathers over-involved with their kids. The terms are meant to describe parents - perhaps most American parents at this point - who feel that in order toraise a successful child, they need to be as tireless and as purposeful as machines. According to a recent study by Cornell University, a majority of parents see world-consuming hyper-engagement as the best method of child-rearing. Going all in on kids has become a cultural best practice, begging this simple question Does it work? Ask a scientist and theyll likely tell you no.While helicopter parents and snowplow parents often rev their engines during their childrens late adolescence and early adulthood, intensive parenting can abflug in a childs babyhood. Parents who really want a kid to get a head start will often p ush their child to hit developmental milestones early. The problem is that hitting a developmental milestone early does elendhing to improve a kids outcomes. Also, pushing them to develop early might actually be detrimental, according to arecently published studyby infant dateianhang expert Dr. Susan Woodhouse of the Leigh University CARE lab.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWe were trying to understand what parents are doing that really matters for children to become securely attached by 12 months, Woodhouse says. In other words, she was looking into parental behaviors that help babies orient to their parent in a developmentally appropriate and secure way. What our data showed is that when a baby really needs you and is crying, if you responded at least half the time, the baby would be securely attached.Woodhouse calls this the secure base provision which simply means parents a re responding correctly to a babys cues enough times that attachment can form. Importantly, in order to reach the secure base provision, parents dont need to respond to their childs cues correctly 100 percent of the time, or even 80 or 70 percent of the time. They simply need to respond correctly 50 percent of the time, which Woodhouse likes to call good enough parenting. The clear virtue of this approach is that it allows parents to behave less mechanically, lowering levels of stress, and shielding kids from the potentially deleterious second-hand effects of anxiety and parental busyness. But thats notlage the whole story. Responding to a child is one thing, but so is letting them explore independently. When the baby is not in distress, learning about the way the world works and exploring, parents get the job done by not interrupting the baby and making them cry, Woodhouse explains. When a cry shuts down the exploratory system and gets the attachment system activated. The exploratio n stops. The baby isnt doing their job anymore and that creates insecurity.Woodhouse notes that the whole point of secure attachment is that when babies need a caregiver a caregiver is there, but that the rest of the time they are allowed to learn how the world works.Sometimes wed see babies who turned out to be insecure because parents were really anxious about trying to provide the very best possible parenting and would do stuff like trying to get the baby to roll over repeatedly until they cried, Woodhouse notes. And insecure attachment can result in a child who grows to be emotionally detached and distrustful, or who may have trouble building relationships. But insecure attachment in babies isnt the only risk of being over-involved. According to a 2012 study, published in the journal PLOS One, kindergarten-age childrens risk for anxiety disorders later in life might be correlated to maternal anxiety or excessive maternal involvement. After tracking 200 children into their elementa ry years, researchers found that children were more likely to have diagnosable anxiety if mothers had responded positively to survey questions like I determine who my child will play with or I dress my child even if he/she can do it alone. The results for over-involvement supported this hypothesis over-involvement was a significant predictor of child anxiety at age 9, even when baseline anxiety was controlled for, the researchers concluded, adding that their findings were in keeping with the results of a meta-analysis showing larger effect sizes for over-involved or intrusive parenting than negative parenting.More recent research suggests that over-parenting continues to affect children even when they are out of high school and on to college. This is the time when, traditionally, children separated from their parents and found some semblance of autonomy. But researchers are finding that parents are remaining involved even as kids enter higher education. When I was in college there was no parental involvement unless there was some kind of crisis, says Dr. Holly Schiffrin, professor of psychology at the University of Mary Washington. Its just a really different level of involvement now. Parents are giving kids feedback on their papers, or emailing or calling me and other faculty members. Its not every student, but its shocking that it happens at all.Intensive parenting really stresses the parent out, Schiffrin says. The research is looking like its not beneficial for kids to do everything for them because they dont become self-sufficient and that is correlated with higher rates of depression and anxiety at the college level.Schiffrin became the leading international expert on the subject after pursuing her curiosity in the family lives of her heavily parented students. That brought her to the parents, who she discovered were suffering in service of providing overwhelming, shock and awe-levels of support. The fact is that parenting is stressful enough. But when pare nts take burdens, either social or educational, off their childrens shoulders, kids do not learn the crucial coping and organizational skills necessary to become functional adults.Schiffrinsmost-cited studylooked into a childs self-determination - essentially the ability to make decisions for oneself, feelings of autonomy and having relationships. A child who has strong feelings of self-determination generally also has a sense of well-being and happiness. Schiffrin wondered if helicopter parenting, defined as a developmentally inappropriate level of involvement, affected a childs self-determination. And yes. Very much so.But Schiffrins findings came with a caveat. Schiffrin notes that the relationship between helicopter parenting and a decreased sense of well-being is correlational and not causal. She also notes that changes in well-being hinge on a childs perception of a parents action. Further studies have found some kids to be unbothered by helicopter parenting because parental involvement facilitated different kinds of experiences and successes. Still, theres little reason to believe intensive parenting is ever good for the parent. And parents are, it turns out, not machines. They need to be considered in the parental equation as they constitute the bulk of it. Parenting that hurts parents is not sustainable even if it has become a norm. That said, children do need support. Countless studies (and all the anecdotal evidence of history) have demonstrated that unreliable parents raise kids with worse outcomes. So the normalizing response to intensive parenting is not a backlash - its a strategic mellowing or, if parents prefer to think about it in these terms, a more tactical approach. Kids need a chance to develop their own skills and sense of self-worth. Providing that is the right the to do. The fact that it might allow you to grab some extra sleep or alone time is merely an added bonus.Finding balance is key, says Dr. Woodhouse. The more relaxed you are, the better. If youre anxious, thats anxiety-provoking. The less worried you are about being an exceptional parent the more exceptional you can be.This article originally appeared on Fatherly.

5 Things You Should be Talking to Your Boss About

5 Things You Should be Talking to Your Boss About5 Things You Should be Talking to Your Boss AboutGoing into your anfhrers office can often be hot or cold You could be getting a pat on the back for a job well done- or a tough bchse of constructive criticism. Your boss may want to assign you an awesome new project- or ask you for the report thats due today (wait, what report?).But how often do you stop by your managers office just to chat?Turns out, there are several things you should be addressing with your boss on a regular basis. When you take the time to talk about these important issues, youll find that youre happier with your career and better positioned in the eyes of your boss, your team, and the company as a whole. So, the next time you pass by your bosss office, stop in and start talking about these five things.1. Where You See Yourself in Five YearsWhether you hope to be in a different role or a different department, its OK- and it can actually be very beneficial- to talk t o your current boss about your career goals. And yes, it can be intimidating to bring this up for the first time (especially if youre hoping to make a big career switch at some point), but it can actually help create more opportunities for you in the long run.Why would your boss be open to your ambition to move up or out of your current role? In many cases, he or she truly does want to see you achieve your goals. As a manager myself, I constantly ask my employees Where do you see yourself in five years?- because if theres a way I can help them along, Ill do it. Whether that means putting in a good word for them in a different department at my current company or assigning them specials projects that will help them build new skill sets for a different role, I want to help.Of course, theres definitely a right and wrong way to phrase your goals (i.e., you dont want to blatantly announce to your boss that youre hoping to jump ship ASAP or that you want to take over your bosss position). Start small by mentioning where you see yourself eventually Id love to move up to a management position someday. If its received well, move on to specifically how you can reach those goals- even if it would eventually require a move to a different department or company.2. Your Ideas for the CompanyWhen youre entrenched in your work, its a common and familiar mumble This would be so much easier if we did it my way. But, how often do you actually present that idea to your boss as a serious solution to a problem?Discussing your ideas with your boss helps you in several ways. First, youre showing him or her that you take initiative, that youre committed to improving the company, and that you truly want to make contributions to the team. Second, you might actually get to see your idea put in action- and assuming its as effective and efficient as you think it is, thats great news for you and your team.To make the most out of the conversation, come prepared with a plan in mind. Try somethi ng like, Ive bedrngnisiced that our new hires arent picking up on the new CRM program very easily. Id love to put together some training documentation to help learn it a little quicker. Heres a quick outline I threw together- what do you think?3. Advice for Tough Work SituationsWhen you view your boss only as the partie who hands out assignments and performance reviews, youll miss out on some great advice. Remember, your boss is a boss for a reason- he or she has been around the block a time or two. So, take advantage of that to further your own career. For example, before my boss was in his current position as a department manager, he was in my position- a team supervisor. So, whenever I come across a challenge that I havent faced before, I drop by his office to talk through the situation. Most times, hes been through a similar situation and is able to give me valuable advice about how he handled it and what he learned to do (and not to do).No, you shouldnt lean on your boss for eve ry problem that pops up, but if you cant figure something out on your own, why not use the valuable resource right in front of you?4. Company and Industry InsightOf course your boss has to manage your day-to-day tasks, but he or she can provide insight into a lot more than just your upcoming deadlines and company values- especially if he or she has been with the company or in the industry for several years. This can range from unfamiliar company processes (whats the standard process to change a position title?) to company history (what it was like when the company was acquired by an equity firm a few years ago?) to your overall industry (how has the healthcare industry changed since you first entered it eight years ago?).Whether it stems from pure curiosity or strategizing for the future, dont be afraid to ask questions about the inner workings of the company or industry as a whole. Youll gain some valuable information- and prove that youre there for more than just a paycheck.5. Your Life Outside of WorkIf your boss follows you on social media, youd probably rather figure out a way for her to know less about your personal life. But, getting a little personal with your boss isnt a bad thing- in fact, it can help solidify your professional relationship. So, spill a few details about your family, your childhood, or even just what you did over the weekend- and ask questions about her life in return. Youll likely find something you have in common, share a laugh, or at the very least relax for a few moments instead of worrying about the status of your current project. You dont have to go into any extreme details or spend hours telling each other your life stories, but connecting with your boss on a personal level can help you feel more comfortable coming to him or her about serious issues. You may never hang out outside of work, but that doesnt mean you have to avoid any sort of personal connection. It may not feel natural at first, but try striking up a conversation wi th your boss about these important issues. In the end (when youre happier in your current job and that much closer to your career goals), I promise, itll be worth it.Photo of boss and employee courtesy of Shutterstock.

kriegsmarine Corps Physical Fitness Standards for WomenMarine Corps Physical Fitness Standards for WomenLike other branches of the military, Marines have high fitness standards for all of their personnel. Every Marine must be physically fit, regardless of age, grade or duty assignment. Fitness is essential to the day-to-day effectiveness and combat readiness of the Marine Corps, so all Marines take part in ongoing physical conditioning. The Marine Corps physical conditioning platoon consists of a physical fitness test and a body composition program for new recruits. Enlisted Marines have to undergo a semi-annual physical fitness test (PFT). Here are the requirements for women in the Marines taking the semi-annual PFT. Sequence of Events for Womens Marines Fitness Test The sequence of PFT events will be left to the discretion of the commanding officer. All PFT events are conducted in a single session, not to exceed two hours in duration. As they move from one event to the next, Ma rines should allow adequate time to recover, stretch and drink water. These are the exercises included in the standard PFT Flexed-Arm Hang The goal of the flexed-arm piste event is for a Marine to maintain elbow flexion and hang for as long as possible. The bar must be grasped with both palms facing either forward or to the rear. The correct starting position begins when the Marines arms are flexed at the elbow, the chin is held above the bar, but not touching it, and the body is motionless. At no time during this exercise should a Marine rest her chin on the bar. Marines are authorized to drop down below the bar, however, some degree of elbow flexion must be maintained with both arms. Once a Marines arms are fully extended or the Marine drops off the bar, the clock will stop. Abdominal Crunches The goal of the abdominal crunch event is for a Marine to execute as many proper and complete crunches as possible within the two-minute time limit. She will lie on a flat surface, wi thshoulder blades touching the deck, knees bent and both feet flat on the deck. A single repetition consists of raising the upper body from the starting position until both forearms or elbows simultaneously touch the thighs, and then returning to the starting position with the shoulder blades touching the deck. No arching of the lower back or lifting the buttocks is permitted. An assistant may be used to hold a Marines legs or feet, at or below the knees in whatever manner that is fruchtwein comfortable for the Marine. A repetition will be counted when an accurate and complete abdominal crunch is performed. Three-Mile Run The goal is for a Marine to complete the measured course as quickly as possible. The Command PT Representative will remain at the start/finish and the other monitor will take the safety vehicle (with communication capabilities) to the halfway point. Monitors will call out the split or finishing time as appropriate, as each Marine passes. Making the Grade Ma rines earn fitness test points based on times and repetitions. In order to pass the semi-annual fitness test, Marines must perform the minimum acceptable performance requirements shown in the charts below for their age group. Gallup Poll Small Business Firing Up, Hiring Down - Spark Hire

Gallup Poll Small Business Firing Up, Hiring Down - Spark HireRemember when the nation couldnt decide if small geschftlicher umgang hiring was up or down? Well, the saga continues. Gallup released a poll last week that showed more small geschftslebenes were letting employees go rather than hiring.Approximately 603 small business owners were surveyed by Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business. Their answers revealed that hiring was essentially stagnant since January 2010, according to Gallup Economy. Roughly 11% of these small business owners had been hiring, but this figure had also remained stagnant since last January as well as last April. So what does this tell about small business hiring in general? Fortunately Gallup has discovered the implications of these figures.Gallup states that though small business hiring is likely to increase this year, it is only by a small percentage. Even worse, the percentage of small businesses planning to add new positions is less than that of a year ago. The survey pointed out that four in 10 small business owners have held back on hiring while one in five owners have let people go because of the Affordable Care Act.It also inferred from the data that Main Street and Wall Street might be a little overly optimistic of the recovering economy given the reality of small business hiring. Gallup Economy spells this out by stating, Because small businesses are the key driver of job growth in the U.S. economy, it is hard to see how the recent surge in economic optimism at least on Main Street can continue to increase without increased small-business job growth. If you happen to be one of the fortunate few small businesses that is hiring now firstly, congratulations. Second, the hiring process doesnt have to be what it used to for your small business. There are ways to save money, giving you greater resources to nurture and grow your small business as it recovers as well.Video Interviews. As you know, there is a cost to interviewing job ca ndidates, but cost is not just limited to traveling interviewees. No one knows better than small businesses that time is money and when youre spending time on interviews, youre losing a lot of that hard-earned money.Video interviewing allows you the flexibility and the time to check out potential candidates. In the time it takes to conduct one phone interview, you can view several, if not dozens, of one-way video interviews.Brand your company and job descriptions. Again, dont waste time during the interview and small business hiring process. Ensure that youre attracting the right candidates for your job openings by getting specific with your company brand and job descriptions. That may sound like a no-brainer, but take a look at these areas again. Do they seem at all general? If so, its time to reassess and tighten these up. Being detailed during the candidate search process can save time and money in the long run.Whats the current state of your small businesss hiring? Share with us below.
